How the Dad Mode AI Configuration Works
This morning my 9-year-old pushed back hard on going to camp because he was worried that he didn't know anybody there.
That's the tough part of summer camp. New people, new places, right when you're not sure you can handle either. He's usually up for a challenge, but this morning he needed the extra push.
I've been working on how I deliver those messages and getting better at it thanks to my Dad Mode project in Anthropic's Claude. I've configured the Claude AI to function like a child psychologist with plenty of context around the two very different personalities my kids have, as well as my own history growing up and how that informs my approach.

Why AI Analysis Improves Parental Communication Clarity
I've learned a TON about how to communicate more effectively with my kids this way. I've learned that a lot of the things I say with the best intentions, meant to encourage, can sometimes have the opposite effect.
For example, I used to say "I'm here to help you be the best version of yourself!" which Claude pointed out may land as: "I'm not good enough as I am in Dad's eyes."
Squashed that phrase pretty quick after reading that.
How Scenario Testing in Claude Prevents Reactive Parenting
When I get emotional or upset, I've learned to take a breath and just run the scenario through Claude, which then helps me talk through a specific scenario BEFORE I engage with my son so that I'm approaching it in a way my kids will actually hear, not just reacting in the moment.
I have dozens of examples where Claude suggested I do something differently than I would normally do, and it worked perfectly.
Just like this:

I'm grateful to be alive at a time when technology can be my thinking partner, in both life and work, so that I can be the best version of myself... By understanding how to use AI as a parenting partner, I can navigate complex emotional landscapes with greater clarity and patience.
I love my kids more than anything on earth and being a Dad is the most important job I've ever had, and the only one that lasts forever. I'll be damned if I'm going to mess it up!
I'm curious...
Have you used AI to help you think differently about parenting? I'd love to know how.
